CARNAL SIN

© 1989 by Lisa Dietz

When knocking at the door of death come I;
I stand unclothed, a soul undignified
by ornamentation, or standard lie,
for from the eyes of Truth, I cannot hide
The Python, eager; waits my arrival,
to judge, to engulf, to extinguish light,
constricted by sins of nature; carnal -
I concede to the serpent, "You are right
I've lived beyond the Creator's restraints,
consuming the apple; calling it fate,
temptation unveiled; to the image; taint;
I thought it was love, now I pay in hate.

            Ere such an end should befall me with haste
           Please illuminate this sinner by grace.
